Disney Seeks Fan Portraits of Donald Duck

Fans of irascible animated hero Donald Duck will get their chance to immortalize the object of their affection on his 75th anniversary, as Disney commissions a new official portrait of the character.

In honor of Donald’s birthday on June 9, D23 — the official community for Disney fans — is seeking submissions for the new portrait from fans.

Full-length oil, acrylic or watercolor canvas portraits of Donald Duck, no larger than 24” W x 36” H, are eligible. To enter, fans must submit original sketches of the planned artwork by June 15. Fans whose work is accepted must complete and delivere the finished portrait by Aug. 15.

Finalists will have their work displayed at the first D23 Expo, set for Sept. 10-13 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The winning portrait will be announced Sept. 12, with the winning artist receiving an authentic “Duckster” trophy. The Duckster was created by Walt Disney in 1960 and has been awarded fewer than two dozen times since, to the likes of original Donald Duck voice actor Clarence Nash and Duck comics artist Carl Barks. The last time a Duckster was presented was more than 20 years ago and only a few of the statuettes remain in the Walt Disney Archives.
