Cartoon Network Tricks Out Megas XLR

Imagine what a New Jersey kid who customizes cars would do with an 80-foot robot he found in a junkyard. Then imagine what would happen when aliens from the future come back to destroy the colossal Earth defense mechanism. That’s the idea behind Megas XLR, the new animated, comedic action/adventure series premiering this weekend on Cartoon Network. The first two episodes air Saturday, May 1, at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Created by George Krstic and Jody Schaeffer, Megas XLR centers on Coop, a 20-something gearhead whose ultimate garage project turns out to be fully loaded with features such as time travel and dimensional shift. As he uses his video game training to keep the robot out of the hands of the reptilian extra-terrestrials known as the Glorft, he is visited by Kiva, the original designer and pilot of Megas. Kiva travels back from the future to find that Megas has been so customized that Coop is the only one who can operate it. Now it’s up to our slacker hero to save the Earth from alien domination.

Krstic and Schaeffer, who both worked on the Emmy-nominated animated series MTV Downtown, serve as executive producers of Megas XLR. Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, Calif., is in production on 26 episodes of the series, which combines aspects of anime and traditional Western-style animation.
